Vodafone Turkey has joined the “One Million Phones for the Planet” campaign initiated by Vodafone Group, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions in the value chain by 2040 in collaboration with WWF.
The campaign, which focuses on reducing electronic waste and creating a more circular economy for unused mobile phones, will involve a donation of 35 TL to WWF-Türkiye’s nature conservation efforts for every mobile phone collected from users. So far, 210,000 phones have been collected in Europe and Africa as part of the campaign.
Meltem Bakiler Sahin, VP of the Vodafone Turkey Foundation and Consumer Business Director, Vodafone Turkey stated: “The impact of a refurbished smartphone on climate change is 87% less compared to a newly manufactured smartphone. A refurbished phone reduces carbon emissions by approximately 50 kilograms and provides savings of nearly 77 kilograms of raw materials. We believe that each of us can make more environmentally friendly choices in how we use technology.”
Nazli Demirpence Turanli, Corporate Partnerships & Fundraising Group Manager at WWF-Turkey, said: “Today, technology, an indispensable part of life, can also become a significant tool in the fight against climate crisis and nature loss. Within the scope of the global collaboration between two international organizations, Vodafone and WWF, digital technology and service users will contribute not only to reducing carbon footprints with a circular economy but also to WWF-Turkey’s efforts to protect our country’s nature and biological diversity, which they have been carrying out for almost 50 years. Protecting our world is possible together.”
